07/31/04  -  Hannover beats ZSK Sofia 2:0
Steven Cherundolo Hannover 96 won today well deserved 2:0 against ZSK Sofia with Mathis scoring off a penalty (79th). The first goal was an owngoal (27th).

It was quite an amusing turn of events: Mathis converted his first attempt, but it was called off because the players ran into the box too early. On his second try he scored again, took the ball and set up to kick another one. He had his laugh on his side ;-)

The US striker picked up an injury in the final minutes of the game.

 07/30/04  -  Hannover draws 1:1 with Frankfurt
Hannover played from the beginning with their B-team against 2nd Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt. Hannover coach Ewald Lienen played a 4-3-2-1 system with the new testplayer Adel Guemari in the 4-chain (left). The American Clint Mathis played on the front left position as a second striker.

Frankfurt dominated the first ten minutes of the game while having 2 chances in the 3rd and 7th minutes. In the 17th Hannover was awarded a free-kick after Wallner was tackled, taken by Clint Mathis from from just outside the box on the left into the goalmouth directly to Schneider. He headed the ball infront of Frankfurt's goalkeeper Markus Pröll.

In the 22nd Mathis took another free-kick (nearly the same position) while Hannover's youngster Agac headed the ball into the net to the 1:0. Hannover 96 dominated the rest of the first half. Mathis had a great scene again in the 27th when he lobbed the ball infront of the box over Frankfurt's defense with a smooth touch on the penalty point to Wallner who shot artisticly at the goal, only to have Pröll save it.

From the 35th the young talent Dennis Wolf changed his position who was playing on the right wing (usually Schröter's position) with Clint Mathis. Wolf has been playing as a forward lately for 96. In the 41st Hannover had their last chance in the first half: Stefulj crossed the ball from the right to the left post while Mathis kicked the ball back to Wallner who failed to score (Pröll saved). The last chance was to Frankfurt in the 42nd.

Hannover began the second half with Schröter subbed for Schneider (back right) in Cherundolo's position who didn't play this game. Mathis played again on the left wing. The first chance came by Frankfurt in the 50th by Meier with a shot off the left post.

In the 67th Lienen changed several players on the field. New in the game: Sousa, Kaufmann, Svitlica and Dabrowski (Mathis subbed out).

22 minutes later Frankfurt equalized to 1:1 . A free-kick from Meier deflected to Hannover's Juric and then Beierle strucked the ball into the net. In the 77th Hannover's Kaufmann just missed a chance to go ahead by shooting the ball over the bar. In the 81st Frankfurt got the last chance of the game on a header but failed in his attempt.

Lienen talked at the press conference about the game:

"That was not what we imagined. We didn't play with all our players because this Saturday we are playing against a strong team (ZSK Sofia). The young players did well, like Wolf, Agac and Guemari. Krupnikovic is still not in his best shape, and But had the flu, that's why Schröter and Dabrowski played in that game (they had a 2 hour practice today). Clint Mathis had a great free-kick and a superb pass to Wallner (the lob). When he goes more into the center he is more dangerous, I wish he would do this more often."

Frankfurt's coach Friedhelm Funkel said: "Neither team is ready for the Bundesliga start yet."

Hannover 96: Juric - Stefulj, Vinicius, Schneider (46. Schröter), Guemari (64. Schinner) - Agac Krupnikovic (46. Sousa), But (64. Kaufman), Mathis (64. Dabrowski), Wolf - Wallner (64. Svitlica)

07/13/04  -  The battle begins for Mathis, Cherundolo
Steve Cherundolo and Clint Mathis arrived back in Hannover today after participating in Sunday's 1-1 friendly draw against Poland in Chicago. The pair arrived this morning but didn't take part of the practice, instead resting after the long international flight.

Tomorrow they will both take routine fitness examinations including blood tests along with latecomer Mohamadou Idrissou and on loan Swiss midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta from Bayer Leverkusen who arrived yesterday. Following the test, the pair will head off with the team to training camp in Bad Lauterberg (Harz) for one week.

With the two Americans having missed one week of preseason camp and fitness training because of international duty, it is yet to be seen if it will work to their disadvantage.

Although Cherundolo is seemingly entrenched as right back starter, he will be given a push by Sylvio Schröter, who will seemingly be asked to play more in a defensive role under coach Ewald Lienen's system, back from his customary midfield slot.

Mathis' job is a bit more precarious.

The 27 year old will have competition for a place with newcomers Roman Wallner, Leandro Fonseca and Barnetta, as well returning players, Daniel Stendel, Thomas Christiansen and Idrissou. Four players that do not figure into Lienen's plans and are on the selling block: Jiri Stajner, Jiri Kaufmann, Daniel Stefulj and Stanko Svitlica may make Mathis' task a bit easier if any of the transfers pan out.

Lienen sees Mathis' more as striker in a 2 forward system with an offense-minded midfielder behind them. Played in that role last season, he did not show the quality as a playmaker as Lienen prefers, and that role seems to be more fit for new transfer from Ricardo Sousa (Boavista).

Who will play in the first game of the season at Leverkusen depends on the next two weeks and is anyone's guess and both Americans will need to be in top form and impress in preseason to cement their starting places.
