11/28/04  -  "Happy birthday, Ewald Lienen!": Hannover 96 takes one point for head coach in defensive battle
Hannover shared the spoils, winning their first points against Stuttgart for the first time since promotion to the Bundesliga with a flawless defensive effort in a goalless draw.

Birthday boy Ewald Lienen, who turned 51 on Sunday, made one change to his starting line up, Canadian Julian de Guzman returning to left back replacing injured Michael Tarnat, with Christoph Dabrowski moving in to play in defensive midfielder, while the visitors' supporters saw Christian Tiffert and Andreas Hinkel instead of Horst Heldt and Zivkovic.

From the start Hannover was denied possession, with Stuttgart controlling midfield but failing to create any clear-cut chances, the best opportunity to break the deadlock in the eighteenth minute when Christoph Dabrowski intercepted a misaimed ball by Stuttgart defender Lahm. Dabrowski fired from twenty yards, but missed the goal by inches on the left.

Stuttgart had their first real effort of the game 8 minutes later, when Hinkel broke down the right flank and crossed well only for Christian Tiffert to head the ball just wide.

On the other side Hannover's cheering fans saw another great effort, when Daniel Stendel nearly grabbed a goal after a great pass from midfielder Nebojsa Krupnikovic. Stuttgart keeper Timo Hildebrand just managed to save the ball before it crossed the line at his near post.

With eleven minutes left of the half, Altin Lala was denied the best Hannover chance of the match when Krupnikovic sent in a beautiful ball that Julian de Guzman picked up on the left just outside the box. Nobody could stop the midfielder from dispatching a lethal cross that found Lala in the goalmouth, but an unfortunate bounce saw the ball jump over the Albanian's foot.

For the most part, the game lacked some ambition in offense, both teams suffering from stray passing in the final third of the field.

Both teams remained unchanged after the break, Stuttgart showed signs of unhappiness with a goalless draw and started pressing harder, but again it was Hannover to crack open the Stuttgart defense.

Silvio Schroeter broke free on the right of two of his Stuttgart markers, his low cross headed home but Stuttgart keeper Hildebrand managed only just to deflect this deadly shot to a corner kick, while on the other end Aliaksandr Hleb set up Tiffert who shot wide from 13 yards.

A brave last second save by Hannover's Robert Enke coming quickly off his line denied Kevin Kuranyi in the seventieth minute.

Defender Dariusz Zuraw almost gave boss Ewald Lienen a late surprise present.

In the eighty-seventh minute he beat the advancing Timo Hildebrand with a precise header from seven yards but Tiffert cleared off the line with a point blank reflex save. Krupnikovic had floated a left corner towards tall Dabrowski who passed it on to Zuraw with the back of his head.

Two flawless defense lines proved to be the key to this goalless but exciting match, and deservedly shared the points, despite Hannover being the more active squad.

Defenders Per Mertesacker and Dariusz Zuraw effectively neutralized the fearsome Stuttgart strikers, Julian de Guzman's defensive performance more than matched Michael Tarnat's, and Christoph Dabrowski returned with a vengeance to the Hannover pitch.

Hannover should have earned a fair play award, not being cautioned once in comparison to three yellow cards for the away team.

Hannover stays fifth in the table, keeping tabs on the "Top Five"-hunt for the title.

STATISTIK:

 11/21/04  -  Hannover 96 draws 1:1 with 1.FC Nuernberg
After Hannvoer went ahead in the 56th through a goal from Daniel Stendel, a late goal from Nuernbergs Marek Mintal in the 81st ensured that the Reds earned just one point on the road. After 45 minutes of a quite unproductive play on both sides the result was deserved at the end (performance-orientated).

Hannover started with the same starting-lineup they played successful in the last 5 games. There was a lack of highlights in the first half: Nuernberg dominated the first 15 minutes but in the last 30 minutes the game was well balanced.

Nuernbergs Vittek missed the goal from 17 meters (16th) and Michal Tarnat had two vaguely chances through a header: The first trial after a cross from Nebojsa Krupnikovic went over the bar (24th) and after a cross from Altin Lala, Tarnat headed right into FCN--goalkeeper Schäfer (36th). The first half ended goalless.

At Nuernberg Vittek had to leave the field due to injury, Kießling played instead. Hannover had the luck on their side in the 54th: The 20-year old German International Per Mertesacker sent a ball inside 96's box to Nürnbergs Marek Mintal who crossed right to Markus Schroth. But Schroth missed the ball infront of the onrushing Hannover goalkeeper Robert Enke, who saved.

In the 56th 96 went ahead: Krupnikovic crossed in the midfield to Danish forward Thomas Christiansen who setup his teammate Daniel Stendel on the right wing. The best 96 scorer strucked the ball into the left corner to 1:0.

Now Nuernberg had to react. Mintal shot in the 65th near the left post, setup by Nikl. 3 Minues later 96-playmaker Krupnikovic came to a golden opportunity through a hammer from 14 meters (setup by Stendel). But Schäfer saved brilliantly.

In the 81st Nuernberg equalized to the final result 1:1. Nuernbergs Hajto sent a high looping cross from half-right into the box. Hannovers central defender Darek Zuraw tried to head the ball outside the box, but it turned out badly and the ball was sent toward the 96 goal, where Mintal reacted very fast and shot the ball into the net to his 11th season tally.

The draw was deserved for both teams at the end.

 11/13/04  -  Hannover beats Mainz 2:0 (1:0)
Thomas Christiansen and Silvio Schroeter scored in Germany's top league, leading Hannover to a well deserved 2:0 victory over FSV Mainz 05. Hannover moved to the 5th in the table.

Hannover started with the same players who had such success against Dortmund earlier in the week in a German Cup match. Mainz head coach Juergen Klopp, however, had to deal with several missing players. Even playing witout the "Weiland brothers", four former 96 players were in the roster.

The Reds saw their first chance after 15 minutes quite unproductive play when German defender Per Mertesacker sent a shot from 10 meters over the bar after a free kick from Serbien midfielder Nebojsa Krupnikovic in the 18th.

The former 96 American striker Conor Casey had the first goal of the game after a long pass from Robert Nikolic only to see referee Dr. Fleischer decide that Casey had unfairly gained an advantage against Mertesacker.

Just 5 minutes later Hannover went ahead after a brilliant long pass from US defender Steven Cherundolo. Mertesacker with his back at the goal (7 meters) sended the floating ball nicely on a volley to Spaniard Thomas Christiansen who strucked the ball powerfully into the net to take a 1:0 lead in the 34th minute.

From that point on Hannover controlled the game were creating chances nearly every minute. In the 38th, a shot from German midfielder Sylvio Schroeter was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Dimo Wache and in the 41st, Krupnikovic had a shot near the left post. Just one minute later Christiansen nearly doubled his tally with a shot off the left post. Canadian midfielder Julian de Guzman had the last chance for the Reds in the first half again with but the left post once again saved the visitors.

The second half started with the same domination from Hannover and in the 51st Hannover put the game out of reach. German forward Daniel Stendel passed after a giveaway from German defender Manuel Friedrich to Krupnikovic who set Schroeter up nicely just on the inside right of the box. Schroeter scored from 13 meters with a flatfooted shot into the left corner.

Mainz seemed to have had the life sucked out of them. They just had two more chances through a free kick from Markus Dworrak in the 62nd saved by Enke and a weak header from Casey saved by Albanian midfielder off the line. 96 had several chances during the last minutes to increase the score including Stendel in the 71st and Christinasen in the 76th, but Hannover was unable to increase their lead and the game ended 2:0.

Hannover played remarkebly superior ease and after the first goal Hannovers game did well. The defense didn't conceid any goals against a Mainz team that has scorded at least once in each Bundesliga game. Hannover was Especially dangerous on offense with Schroeter, Stendel and Christiansen was continuously wreaking havoc for Mainz. And also again a great playmaker Krupnikovic was the reason for success!

96 head coach Ewald Lienen announces 18 man roster for the game against 1. FSV Mainz 05:

Enke, Juric, Cherundolo, Mertesacker, Zuraw, Schneider, Tarnat, Lala, de Guzman, Dabrowski, But, Krupnikovic, Schröter, Stendel, Stajner, Christiansen, Wallner and Leandro.

11/09/04  -  Hannover 96 beats Borussia Dortmund in German Cup 1:0
A jubilant crowd of 39,000 saw Hannover pull through last night's highly dramatic DFB-Cup game into the quarterfinal. Silvio Schröter scored for the Reds in the 59th minute, crushing all hope for Dortmund. Two questionable penalties awarded by a shaky referee couldn't change the final result. Both Christiansen and Ewerthon missed the goal in the heart-stopping last ten minutes of a gripping DFB-Cup scorcher of a game.

Hannover's head coach Ewald Lienen felt comfortable with his experienced squad of last weeks' Bundesliga games. So there were no changes to the 96 starting line-up with forwards Christiansen and Stendel.

Quite to the contrary on the Dortmund side, where 10 injured players made life difficult for Dortmund head coach Bert van Marwijk. Warmuz, Metzelder, Evanilson, Oliseh, Addo, Gambino, Odonkor, Bergdölmo, Ricken and Madouni weren't able to help Dortmund in this crucial knockout game.

The situation got worse when Tomas Rosicky and Guy Demel were substituted due to injuries during the game. The game started 15 minutes late with Dortmund pulling off the better start. Koller crossed the ball to the Brasilian Ewerthon. He shook the 96-defence to the core when he drove the ball from the edge of the penalty area into the side of the net. Defender Per Mertesacker had deflected the ball dangerously; so 96-keeper Enke wouldn't have stood a chance.

Only four minutes later Ewerthon did it again. Mertesacker blocked his first attempt, only to see the fast Brazilian sending to ball towards the goal from an almost impossible right angle. Cherundolo saved the day in the last second, clearing the ball from the goal line.

Silvio Schröter was denied his first good attempt for the home team from 12 yards when Dortmunds goalkeeper Weidenfeller fisted the ball away with a desperate reflex reaction. Both sides had their chances.

Ewerthon broke up the 96 defence lines in the 20th with a spectacular run an the right and was finally frustrated by Robert Enke who deflected Ewerthon's hammer sensationally with his foot. Daniel Stendel lobbed in a forceful header from 8 yards that was heading home when in the last second Borussia keeper Weidenfeller swiped it over the bar.

Hannover got stronger as the game wore on in the first half. In the 38th Schröter sent a beautifully sharp Tarnat pass flying over the bar from six yards. Dortmunds forward Koller baffled his own goalie with a mishap header after Schröter's free kick just before the interval.

The second half started off with a defending Dortmund team and a less aggressive home side. Schröter tested Dortmunds Weidenfeller with a 22 yard attempt after 56 minutes only the find the Dortmund keeper in good shape.

Only three minutes later he wasn't left a chance though when Silvio Schröter put Hannover in the lead with a half high thumper of a shot into the right corner. The jubilant crowd cheered on a home team that was getting more self-confident by the minute. Dortmund was forced into defending.

Nerve ends were fraying with Dortmund's head coach van Marwijk who was sent off to sit with the crowd by referee Dr. Wack after a tiff at the side line between opposing players. What proved to be Dortmund's only chance so far went wide: Kringe's volley shot passed the left post in the 78th minute. A shaky referee provided for a highly dramatic finale in a good but not fantastic performance.

The last ten minutes saw two questionable decisions when referee Dr Wack pointed to the penalty spot twice. First a penalty was awarded to 96 after a de Guzman pass reached Stendel who hooked in to Weidenfeller's save. Thomas Christiansen looked determined but shot miserably wide.

Three minutes later de Guzman was supposed to have felled Sebastian Kehl. The Brazilian Ewerthon walked to the spot for Dortmund and was met by the outraged crowd's piercing whistles. He was obviously impressed by the crowd's reaction as he shot wide on the left.

Zuraw blocked another Ewerthon chance in the 89th, and Jensen couldn't capitalise on a free kick in extra time. The game ended 1:0.

For the first time since their historic success winning the DFB-Cup in 1992 Hannover reaches the quarterfinal. The crowd saw a great team effort of the Red squad around Schröter and Stendel. They celebrated a well-deserved victory over a strong but beatable Dortmund team. Krupnicovic was holding the strings. Lala and de Guzman were destroying the opponent's game in midfield. A strong defence was rendering Dortmund's strikers useless. And goalie Robert Enke played gloriously, goading fans to a banner "Enke for Germany, Kahn for Afghanistan". Thomas Christiansen performed well but was unlucky with his miss on the penalty. Hannover's supporters in the North stand celebrated a happy Hannover team, and their head coach Ewald Lienen. Dortmund suffers yet another defeat in difficult times, with financial problems looming on the horizon.

 11/06/04  -  FC Bayern Munich beats Hannover 96 3:0
Hannover fell to FC Bayern Munich in matchday 12 after the host jumped out to an early 3rd minute lead, adding two late strikes to take the tie 3-0 at the Olympiastadion. Though Bayern was deserved winners in the end, the final score was not indicitive of the match, as Hannover put in a solid performance.

Hannover head coach Ewald Lienen opted for a strike tandom of Daniel Stendel and Thomas Christiansen. Unable to play due to injury were Roman Wallner, (replaced in the lineup by Jiri Kaufman) Ricardo Sousa and the Christoph Dabrowski.

FC Bayern Munich were missing Lucio (red card suspension), Linke (accumulated yellow card suspension) and seven further injured players.

Bayern got off to a dream start in the 3rd minute, when after Canadian Julian de Guzman lost the ball to Thorsten Frings in the midfield who passed to Roy Makaay. The Dutch forward then lobbed for Claudio Pizzaro, whose perfect run split an offside trap from Hannover defenders Per Mertesacker and Steven Cherundolo, and then fired home from an acute angle from just seven yards out.

Bayern nearly double the lead in the 24th, when a free kick from Frings near the left post went wide of the left post, and seven minutes later when a sharp Makaay finish was wrongly called offside.

The home side's dominance in the first half continued, but Makaay's finishing stroke betrayed him when he somehow missed a volley from 5 yards near the left post after a perfect setup by the England international Owen Hargreaves.

After having withstood the first half onslaught, suffering only the early goal, Hannover came out the better side in the second, and maintained the lion's share of possession, nearly coming close on several occasions.

Never closer was the attempt of Albanian midfielder Altin Lala whose shot from a long range skimmed the paint of the crossbar, and although Hannover didn't attack successfully, it seemed that they were equalizing soon.

But then the inevitable came, and Bayern doubled the lead against the run of play.

In the 80th minute Mehmet Scholl played a clever ball through the defense to Makaay who converted from 10 yards, Cherundolo again the victim of the offside trap, this time paired with Darius Zuraw.

Hannover was beaten then.

After a chance from Paolo Guerrero in the 82nd and one by Hannover's Sylvio Schröter in 88th, Bayern sealed the game in the 90th when German midfielder Jens Jeremies sent in a looping cross from the left wing to the far post where Makaay headed across the face of goal. The awaiting Paolo Guerrero finished with his first Bundesliga goal from 4 yards to the close out the scoring.

Bayern won deserved with great performances from Roy Makaay and Mehmet Scholl, the early goal was one of the reason that Hannover lost the game against a clever Bayern side.

But there is no need for dissappointment because Hannover performed well, and despite the loss remain 6th in the table.
