04/23/05  -  Serious Setback in Race for UI-Cup: Mainz beats Hannover 2:0
Can the UI-Cup dream still come true? In a poor away match the Reds are deftly defeated 0:2 (0:1) by promoted FSV Mainz 05. German defender Mathias Abel and former Hannover midfielder Fabian Gerber score the goals for Mainz who are fighting relegation successfully. Hannover 96 drop to position 12 in the Bundesliga table and are in danger to leave behind a boulevard of broken dreams with supporters.

Team coach Ewald Lienen again had to make do without injured strikers Daniel Stendel, Veljko Paunovic and Thomas Christiansen. Two players returned to the roster after long injury breaks: young local defender talent Soeren Halfar and Swiss midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta, who had his comeback to the pitch in the 59th. Czech striker Jiri Stajner played from kick off, replacing Brazilian-born Italian Vinicius due to Hannover's stronger forward orientation. On Mainz' side keeper Christian Wetklo had to take the place of injured regular Dimo Wache, and striker Benjamin Auer replaced American international Conor Casey, another former Hannover player, in the home team's starting line-up.

From kick off the Reds had more possession without being able to capitalise on it. But it was Mainz' midfielder Fabian Gerber who is first in trying to convert a rebound from striker Michael Thurk's effort, but his shot from 10 yards is denied by alert Hannover keeper Robert Enke (13.). Again it is due to Enke's outstanding skill that Hannover is saved from falling behind in the 22nd, when he deflects Abel's 25-yard hammer to a corner. Midfielder Christof Babatz aims the resulting corner kick for the near post, finds Brazilian midfielder Antonio da Silva's in mid-air who helps the ball on with the back of his head to the far post, where defender Abel rushes forward and squeezes his header into the net from point-blank range, shaking off his marker Stajner. So Mainz goes one up in the 23rd, and only one minute later Hannover have all the luck when referee Wolfgang Stark fails to award a deserved penalty to the home team after Hannover defender Michael Tarnat brings down Niclas Weiland inside the box. Almost half an hour passes before the Reds appear dangerously in front of the home goal. Czech striker Jiri Kaufman grabs a Mertesacker rebound but sends the ball over the crossbar from six yards after defender Benjamin Weigelt's fair but robust tackle. A couple of minutes later Weigelt fires at goal from 19 yards but Enke swerves the ball around the right post. After that the match was moving at a trickle, and so it trickled away into the break, without any change in the score.

The match commenced after the interval, but there was no change to Hannover's erratic way of playing. 96 found no means to penetrate Mainz' defensive formation, and the home team continued creating the on-goal action. Striker Niclas Weiland asserts himself against three Reds and sends a cross to the right, but striker Michael Thurk wallops the ball from 16 yards but hits nothing but air (56). Another seven minutes and Jiri Kaufman slams a low shot from the edge of the box on target but stand-in goalkeeper Christian Wetklo stretches like a cat and fishes the ball from the right corner of the goal just in time. Four minutes later Thurk stops Weigelt's volley shot in mid-air, pivots and fires a sharp shot from 19 yards that brushes over the crossbar. The final blow to Hannover's strained efforts for an equaliser comes only 12 minutes later in the aftermath of confusion between Hannover's defenders. Dariusz Zuraw stops the ball, it bounces off towards Steve Cherundolo and Per Mertesacker, and none of the three makes the decisive move. Striker Fabian Gerber takes advantage of the situation, grabs the ball and leaves Enke not a chance, putting it away from 11 yards on the left. Substitutes Roman Wallner and Leandro had minor chances (86 and 87), but failed to change the outcome of an inconsistent match.

The Reds suffer rightful defeat in a contest lacking all effectiveness on their behalf. League climber Mainz successfully fight relegation, whereas 96 squander the chance away to gain a good table position in the final rush for UI-cup places. In view of Hannover's meandering performance one never felt assured that the Reds could turn the tables, 96-goalie Robert Enke being the only positive exception. Hannover 96 have next Sunday's fixture to vindicate themselves, playing 1. FC Nuremberg at home in the AWD Arena.

04/19/05  -  From "Down Under" To The Reds
Trevor Edwards and his friends from Australia, came to see the match against Bayern Munich last Saturday.

Trevor told 96soccer.com about his interest in Hannover 96 and the game:

"Back in Australia my family had a German exchange student from Hannover who got me interested in 96. To begin we were disappointed to find out Michael Ballack wouldn't play, but glad it would make the job of Hannover easier. We knew from the start it would be tough for Hannover but they defended really well and didn't give Bayern much avenue to goal. Hannover did seem to have a couple of chances. We think that a draw would have been a fairer result however it is always nice to see a goal - and it was a good goal- just would have been nice to see it down the other end.

The crowd was awesome we couldn't understand anything but the chants and atmosphere were great. One mate took some sound recording in the stadium and has played it ever since."

 04/16/05  -  Hargreaves' Home Shocker-Hannover 96 loses 0:1 to Bayern Munich
Once again Owen Hargreaves, once again a last minute goal, just like last season! The only Englishman in Bayern Munich's squad does it again, shocking the Reds and taking away the points from a sold out AWD Arena. After a goalless high-class first half both teams seemed to be happy to share the spoils in a less exiting second. But out of the blue the English midfielder puts away a last-minute lucky shot, and Bayern Munich out of their misery: contenders for the German cup trophy Schalke and Stuttgart lose today, giving record German champions Bayern a comfortable six point lead at the top of the German Bundesliga's table.

Hannover's coach Ewald Lienen could rely on experienced players for the battle with Germany's record champions from Bavaria. Former Munich player Michael Tarnat returned to his post as left defender after a long injury break, so Lienen relocated Brazilian defender Vinicius to midfield. Czech striker Jiri Kaufman was assisted by German midfielder Silvio Schroeter in forward position. Two more strikers were absent with injuries: German Daniel Stendel and Serbian Veljko Paunovic, leaving Spanish striker Thomas Christiansen on the substitution's bench. The guests from Munich sorely missed injured Michael Ballack, Bixente Lizarazu and Jose Guerrero, but taking on midfielders Torsten Frings (German) and Hasan Salihamidzic (Bosnia-Herzegowina) instead.

Bayern got the better start and tried rounding up the Reds in their own half. Not even 8 minutes into the game, German midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger fires a shot at goal, taking Dutch Roy Makaay's cross from the left directly, but sending the ball high into the North terraces. Three minutes later Robert Enke risks everything with a point-blank save against Claudio Pizarro: the Italian forward grabs Willy Sagnol's cross from the right, where the French defender had outwitted Michael Tarnat, but is defeated by Hannover's courageous keeper. But Bayern had to realise that Hannover isn't a push-over. Silvio Schroeter with his throw-in puts Albanian midfielder Altin Lala on track on the right. Lala's cross reaches Kaufman, whose shot at goal is deflected by Bayern's goalkeeper Oliver Kahn, who runs for the ball and grabs it before Vinicius can capitalise. Only two minutes later Silvio Schroeter has the lead on the tip of his toe, after a build-up involving Lala and Kaufman, but he doubles once too many and cannot place his shot from 17 yards. Tons of luck for Hannover in the 21st, when a regular goal for Bayern was called offside, after Makaay had pushed Ze Roberto's pass into the net: German referee Lutz Wagner made the wrong decision, but the right one for the Reds. The match gathered momentum, and the crowd of 50,000 got what it expected: a fierce crossing of swords. Schroeter hits the outer net with a shot from 20 yards (22), Tarnat's header scrapes wide of the left post (27); midfielder Frings' drop-kick (23) and Makaay's distance effort from 25 yards (25) are denied by flawless Robert Enke. Hannover again seemed to have the sure lead when excellent American defender Steven Cherundolo sets up Schroeter with a cross as sweet as candy: Schroeter hammers the ball on target from eight yards, but the ball brushes past the post without doing the damage (31). Four minutes later Schroeter's passes to Serbian playmaker Nebojsa Krupnikovic, who fails to control the bouncing ball in the face of Oliver Kahn. Roy Makaay settles the matter for Bayern with his eight-yard header from the right that passes outside the left post three minutes before the interval.

After the break Bayern again gets the head start on the pitch and almost grabs the lead when Pizarro's tight-angle shot from the left misses wide of the far post (52). Only four minutes later Makaay hammers the ball over the crossbar. Hannover's solid defense couldn't be breached by Bayern, and whereas the Bavarians found no means to crack open Hannover's guard, the home team stopped their own attack moves in favour for quick pinprick counterattacks. Lala on the right helps the ball on towards Schroeter, who doubles instead of shooting at goal directly, his attempt going wide of the Bayern goal (78). The crowd, happyily chanting and content with a goalless draw, was flabbergasted when substitution Owen Hargreaves scored with a lucky shot from 23 yards into the top right corner of the net, leaving flawless Enke not the slightest chance for a save.

With a repeat of last season's last minute goal, the Englishman has pushed the door wide open for Bayern to win the German cup trophy once again. Germany's record champions Bayern pull ahead of cup contenders Schalke and Stuttgart with six points. Some people have all the luck: Bayern pulls out of a sticky situation like many times before, despite courageous Reds and their excellent chances to decide the match for Hannover 96 as early as before the interval, with the help of defender Steven Cherundolo and forward Silvio Schroeter, playing a great match. What a pity...!

04/09/05  -  Own goal by unlucky Steven Cherundolo gives Bochum victory
A desperately unlucky own-goal by U.S. defender Steven Cherundolo (56th) gave Vfl Bochum a 1:0 (0:0) victory after a weak performance on both sides. It seemed to be a flawless match until the own-goal. The Reds dominated the first half , but Bochum fought back in the second half in a game that should have ended in a tie. Relegation bound Vfl Bochum found fresh hope climbing out the cellar while Hannover drops dow to the 10th in the standings with 3 points away from a spot for the UI-cup.

Hannover 96-coach Ewald Lienen was troubled to replace three regulars. Injured Serbien striker Veljko Paunovic, former Bochum forward Thomas Christiansen and defender Michael Tarnat were missing in the starting line-up. Brazilian defender Vinicius took Tarnat's place left back and the two Chechz's Kaufman and Stajnrer were playing upfront. The home team was left only without long-term injured Zdebel and Trojan.

The home team began with a tentative start with two chances. Knavs passed after a free-kick from Wosz outside the box to Meichelbeck who missed the left post in the 3rd minute. One minute later Chechz International Lokvenc headed after a pass from the left wing through Bönig to Danish Madsen who shot from 15 meters over the bar. The Reds dominated the first half throughout after that critical start. After 15 minutes of play Jiri Stajner hesitate finishing from the right and a moment later Jiri Kaufman's shot was blocked.

The best chance came again through Kaufman after a pass from Vinicus from the left flank. But Kaufman's shot from a tight angle (from the right) hit only outside of the net (17th). Two minutes later Canadian midfielder Julian de Guzman brilliantly setup from the right wing to Stajner near the left post who passed into the center instead of finishing where then Knavs cleared. The last scene of the first half came by German Christoph in the 25th who shot near the right post.

Bochum who needed three points in the relegation fight didn't create any chances while Hannover seemeded to be satisfied with this flawless tie and the teams went into the brak.

It was again Bochum who had the better start. when Madsen shot from 14 meters near the left post after a pass from Tapalovic (52nd). Just four minutes later Steven Chrundolo was the unlucky person of this game who had shown until the upcoming scene a strong performancve against Bochoum's Brazilian Edu. The U.S. defender caused a free-kick shot by Preuß into the box. Maltritz was awaiting the looping ball and headed near the right post but Cherundolo headed that ball in reflex action into the right net (56th).

Despite two substitituiosn in the offense on Hannover's side, with Leandro, Stendel new in the game The Reds didn't create any danger upfront while Bochum dominated the rest of the second half playing offensively.

Minute after minute the home team came to chances, like in the 66th through Misimovic and a header from Edu in the 73rd near the left post. It was strange that it took 75 minutes of play when Hannover's goalkeeper Robert Enke first had to save a ball easiely in the 76th after a shot from Preuß and in the 77th through a shot by Wosz.

In the 78th unlucky Cherundolo who seemed to play insecure after his own-goal was substituted through Austrian forward Roman Wallner.

Bochum had just another two chances in the 85th through Edu who shot at the the left and a lob from Misimovic one minute later saved by Enke. The game ended 1:0.

After 96 dominated the first half with a compact defence Cherundolo's own-goal lead Bochum to victory. Hannover missed scoring in the first half against the wek home team, while Bochum woke up in the second half. In the end it was an annoying unnecessary loss. 96 missed a step forward to the UI-cup spot.

04/02/05  -  Jolly joker Jiri! 96 storm the Betzenberg in Kaiserslautern and win 2:0!
Striker Jiri Kaufman (picture) is man-of-the-match against Kaiserslautern! The hero joker in the pack replaces Stendel in the second half and scores twice for 96, stopping Kaiserslautern's six-month winning streak at home and saving important three points for Ewald Lienen's squad at the same time. Hannover rises to position 8 in the table and proves a hopeful for the UI cup still.

Key players missing from Hannover's starting roster: Coach Ewald Lienen once again had to improvise replacing injured regulars. German defenders Soeren Halfar and Michael Tarnat were missing, as well as strikers Thomas Christiansen (Spain) and Veljko Paunovic (Serbia). So Brazilian defender Vinicius moved back to defense after his short but successful excursion to defensive midfield position in the previous match. German defender Per Mertesacker was forced to plough the pitch with a broken nose, protected by a plastic face-shield. Midfielders Altin Lala (Albania) and Julian de Guzman (Canada) returned to the starting line-up after serving yellow card suspensions. The home team on the other hand appeared in top formation: only injured goalkeeper Tim Wiese had to be replaced by his deputy Thomas Ernst.

The Reds, playing in their green away-strip, had the better start. Hannover's compact defense gave self-confidence to Nebojsa Krupnikovic. The Serbian playmaker tried kick-and-rush with mostly unmarked defender Vinicius, resulting in good chances for the Brazilian with a header in the 2nd and a seven-yard tight-angle shot from the left in the 6th minute. The Kaiserslautern "Red Devils" answered with a distance effort by Greek striker Ioannis Amanatidis that went amiss from 19 yards (10). For the next 24 minutes viscous play dominated the match. But a combined effort by Czech striker Jiri Stajner and Krupnikovic set up German midfielder Silvio Schroeter on the right, who plays a sweet, sharp cross towards German striker Daniel Stendel, waiting at the near post, but failing to control the bouncing ball. Two minutes later striker Halil Altintop misses goal with an artistic shot that passes just outside the right post. So it was nil all for the break.

Three new players came out onto the pitch after the interval. The home side had ineffective midfielder Seitz and harmless striker Amanatidis substituted by German striker Carsten Jancker and German midfielder Ferydoon Zandi. Ewald Lienen sent Czech striker Jiri Kaufman into battle for Daniel Stendel. The match gained from the substitutions. Four minutes into the second half Jancker serves up for Thomas Riedl, whose 18-yards hammering shot brushes over the left top corner of the goal. Hannover drew back into compact defensive position, and failed to capitilise from two distance efforts by Schroeter and Kaufman (51, 56). Home supporters were hoping for the final rush for Hannover's goal, but 96 bit back! Kaiserslautern defender Timo Wenzel misjudges Krupnikovic's free-kick, Polish defender Dariusz Zuraw at the right post helps the ball on with a sharp header into goalmouth, and Kaufman beats Ciriaco Sforza to it: the Czech striker nudges the ball over the goal-line from three yards.

The home side tried everything to get back into the match, but Wenzel's 13-yard-shot in the 76th is deflected to a corner, and Selim Teber's aims to high from the edge of the area in the 87th. It was the crowning glory for Jiri Kaufman to make a perfect day for Hannover happen in extra time. With a precise pass playmaker Krupnikovic sends Julian de Guzman running down the left, who is watching Kaufman on his track in the middle. The Canadian waits for the exact moment to sent his sharp cross from the left edge of the area, the ball finding Kaufman in point-blank position, leaving not the slightest chance for a save by 'keeper Ernst. Long-time bencher Kaufman decides the game for 96 with a dashing double pack.

Once again compact defensive play proved to be the key part in today's away victory for Hannover 96, nipping Kaiserslautern's play in the bud. Unfamiliar efficiency on goal crowned a solid defensive effort. Calm goalkeeper Robert Enke was protected by a strong defense-line, where Mertesacker played with a broken nose but without a handicap, Steven Cherundolo who has seen almost 270 minutes of action in less than a week including his appereances with the U.S. against Mexico and Guatemala, and Vinicius served convincingly on the outer right defensive perimeter. Nebojsa Krupnikovic directed play from the centre with decisive ideas, being involved in both the build-ups to scoring, and joker in the pack Jiri Kaufman executed flawlessly. 96 stays in the run for the UI cup, but Kaiserslautern suffers home defeat for the first time in six months.
