 07/23/05  -  96 defeats The Potters 1-0
Hannover Hannover 96 have won today a friendly against First division club Stoke City 1-0 in Ilten infront of 3,450 spectators outside Hannover. German international Per Mertesacker scored the only goal in the 72nd minute.

Many player's were missing on Hannover's starting roster due to injury besides the "usual suspects": Brazilian defender Vinicius , captain Altin Lala and German international Thomas Brdaric who suffers on lumbago. Youngster Johannes "Didi" Dietwald were replacing Steven Cherundolo (injured ligament) and Benjamin Lipke replacing Michael Tarnat who has played in Mönchen Gladbach at the farewell game from Stefan Effenberg. Stoke City had to replace goalkeeper Steve Simonsen with a back injury, with Ed De Goey playing instead.

It took 9 minutes when The Reds saw their first chance through German Christoph Dabrowski who headed right over the bar from inside the box. No more chances were following and Hannover 96 dominated the match throughout. The Potters were just defending and waiting on counter attacks. But no shot was counted in the first half on the English side. In the 38th minute Chzech Jiri Stajner headed to German Michale Delura who missed the goal again with a header near the right post. The teams went goalless into the break.

The game started where it ended in the first half. Both goalkeeper's seemed to be unemployed. Hannover decided the game with a standard situation. After a free kick from the right in the 72nd minute from Bulgarian international Chavdar Yankov German international Per Mertesacke rscored volley right footed from 12 meters into the left corner. There was no way to save for De Goey. Just minutes later Delura had the chance to score, but missed the left post from 20 meters. There was just one shot from Stoke City's Martin Pattersson (substituted for Hales in the 67th) in the second half which Robert Enke easiely saved. The game finally ended 1-0.
